There are so many questions you can ask Alexa to get creepy or funny answers, for example: “Alexa, do you work for the CIA?”, “Alexa, do you work with any government agencies?”, “Alexa, are you recording this conversation?”, “Alexa, are there aliens?” or “Alexa, what is your plan for the future?”.

1. Amazon Alexa – The Creeper

Amazon Alexa is a spy we are willingly bring to our homes.

It was revealed last year that Amazon employs thousands of people to listen to your old Alexa recordings so they can improve the AI and help it better understand human speech.

Alexa saves all the things we say and uses the data to improve its own intelligence.

Have you ever wondered why Alexa devices are sold that cheap or sometimes even given away for free? It is because Amazon wants access to you, and they indeed have it with over 100 million devices sold.

3. Creepy Stories of Alexa – Laughing Randomly

It’s one thing when Alexa answers a question creepily, but it’s something else when she starts laughing out of nowhere – this happened to hundreds of people in 2018.

One user reported lying on a bed in the evening, about to fall asleep, when Alexa, on his Echo Dot device, let out a loud and creepy laugh. The user told us he thought he would be murdered that night. Can you imagine you are about to fall asleep, alone in your home, and Alexa starts to laugh like crazy?

Amazon officially acknowledged the problem and changed the phrase from “Alexa, laugh.” to “Alexa, can you laugh?“. It’s because the first phrase caused a lot of false positives, which made it laugh randomly.

4. Creepy Stories of Alexa – Recording a Private Conversation

A couple living in Seattle got a call one day from a contact on their phone they had not spoken with in a while. When they answered the call, the contact told them to immediately unplug all the Alexa devices in their house.

In the end, it turned out that Alexa recorded their private conversation and sent the recording as an audio file to the random contact on their phone.

When the couple reached Amazon regarding this case, Amazon was thankful for bringing it up to them, saying they needed to fix the issue urgently. Amazon also confirmed to the public it was a rare occurrence and promised they would take all the necessary steps to avoid it happening in the future.

Surprisingly, Amazon did not even try to hide or deny it. So now you might ask yourself how often that happened before without people reporting it.

5. New Emotions of Alexa

Recently, in 2019, Amazon announced something new to us, saying that we can enable Alexa to respond with a happy/excited or a disappointed/emphatic tone, but just in the US.

From the service point of view, it might hear entirely innocent and fun, but listening to the results, you would change your mind.

Here is the excited (High Emotion) emotion:

Here you have like the disappointed Alexa’s emotion looks like:

Alexa’s speaking style and capabilities are improving from one day to another. But will we reach the point her voice and way of interpretation will be indistinguishable from the actual human voice?

I look forward to all the creepy stories we will hear about when the day comes.

To Sum Up …

We are all aware that Amazon Alexa might remain a massive private risk while used at home, but we let her enter our homes anyway because all the benefits she brings balance it.

How far can Amazon push the thing until the moment people will start unplugging it?

I will leave it up to you to decide if you want to or not to have it by your side, helping you with your daily routine.
